"Why," you ask? Because we want profile pages to have freedom of customization, but also to have some consistency. This way, when anyone visits a deviant, they know they can always find the art in the top left, and personal info in the top right.

What size do you usually post with?
well i still have an old jalopy of a monitor standard 15in so max resolution on that is 1024x768. 800x600 would frame it nicely and a 600x450 would say be around a 4x6in print. anything larger than 1024x768 will fill fullscreen montiors that are like 17in and up. when you go to submit a photo during that process you will usually see a blurb about standard resolution sizes so you can take a look at that list and decide what size to post.
there are some rules here for each section or grouping of artwork. for example if you are going to submit something as a Wallpaper, you must adhere to the standard wallpaper sizes (which are listed when you go to post). for wallpapers i usually use 1024x768 or 1280x960. Photoshop is great for doing all your editing work on the 'puter. i'll call you up later today and we yap about it.
